Tips & Tricks: How to Choose the Perfect Kitchen Backsplash

Nothing adds a wow factor to your home like a gorgeous kitchen backsplash; it's also the one area of the room where your personal style really shines. The choices for kitchen backsplashes number in the thousands, which can become overwhelming for homeowners. Today we'll go over a few of the most important things to consider when choosing a kitchen backsplash. (And for all of our fellow Nashville residents, we'll tell you our favorite places to find beautiful tile!)

Color: Do you love bright, saturated color or timeless neutrals? Backsplashes not only protect walls from stains and splatters; they also function as a focal point and finishing touch to your kitchen. Whether you choose a colorful tile like the green one above from Fireclay Tile or a classic white or gray, make sure your backsplash complements the other design elements you've chosen, especially the countertops.

Shape and Pattern: In addition to color, the shape, layout, and material of the backsplash all play a role in the decision making process. Fishscale or Moroccan tiles, as seen above, for instance, are too daring or busy for some homeowners, who prefer clean, classic lines. (We happen to adore them, though.) Instead of focusing on current trends, choose a tile that you love and will continue to enjoy for years to come, whether it's a plain white subway tile or a high-contrast, intricate pattern.

Overall Design: A backsplash can make or break a room. When done right, it elevates a kitchen from a utilitarian space to an expression of personal taste. When thrown together without thought, it can be downright disastrous. Take time to determine your design aesthetic and how you want the backsplash to fit in with the rest of the kitchen.

Durability & Maintenance: Of course, a backsplash can be gorgeous but maddeningly difficult to clean and maintain. (We're looking at you, white marble.) For many, the task of resealing natural stone every year or stressing over the staining that can occur on some materials just isn't worth it. For others, any amount of time and effort is worth a swoon-worthy backsplash. Especially consider the maintenance if you have young children, as we do. The headaches that would inevitably come with every grape juice or spaghetti sauce splatter might make that luxurious backsplash less appealing.

Budget: Here's a little secret for ya: backsplashes can be downright exorbitant. Handpainted artisan tile can cost $150 per square foot or more. That adds up quickly, friends. Fortunately for most homeowners, there are plenty of affordable kitchen backsplash options that are just as beautiful as their more costly counterparts. That ever-popular material, white subway tile, generally costs less than $2 per square foot, so there's no reason you can't have a gorgeous kitchen without breaking the bank.

So now that you've diligently done your research and thought out your plan, where do you find your perfect backsplash material? There are plenty of online purveyors, but we prefer to see things up close and personal. Most retailers who are not local to your area will you send you samples, although there's often a fee for this.

For those of you in Nashville, we would love to meet you at one of our favorite local retailers to discuss all of your options! They are:
